Abstract

Friends have thought that Comenius will stay in Sweden over winter. That is how the chaos in correspondence happened. That is the reason why Comenius did not answer for so long. He received a letter from Herbert about mistakes in his treatise. Comenius will answer both of his letters at once. Comenius writes about the book Gangraena published by T. Edwards and sent to Bergius. Comenius looked over it with horror and joy at once. Comenius writes about his opinions on Independents. He acquired from baron Dohna Bergius' treatise Apostolische Regel for Hartlib. Comenius' patron had promised pension, but he payed only Comenius' pension for the last year. Comenius would like to help “Ro” but he does not have anything to give.

Immanuel! Ad binas Tuas respondere habeo, amicorum desideratissime. Alteras 22 Junii, alteras 15 Octobr. datas. Comments

  • Document type: [parts autograph - by Comenius' hand only the end of the letter.]
  • Provenance: Archive of the Unity of Brethren, Leszno
  • Varia/Notes (incl other copies): Includes a Czech and German sentence. Exemplar is a model for scribal copy in KNM VI E 11, ff. 178a - 179b; double dating!: see incipit and explicit, part of the content is omitted and replaced by a summary (Czech sentence on f. 1b); Comenius had probably read the letter over and added the notes in red; (following Patera p. 281 part is published in Milton und Seine Zeit, I. 2., p.480, by A. Stern)
  • Mistakes in modern editions: minor markings from fol. 1a (right lower margin) not included in Patera's edition, colour given for the marginal notes, mistakes in transcription, underlines missing, in the part written by Comenius inaccurate readings
