Abstract
By permission of Mr. Hales, he encloses letters of Dr. Pococke,
Abp. Laud and Dr. Langbaine transcribed from the originals by me
(those of Laud concerning the canons, those of Langbaine the
University). He quotes passages from a letter of Monsieur Pegresito
Sir Robt. Cotton remarking on Camden's Britannia, thinking
them probably useful for students of Camden. If C. thinks these
MSS. of Hales worthy of a place in the catalogue he suggests
addition of two others which he names. As a recognition of Mr.
Hales' good offers, who asks nothing, he makes the proposal
coming from himself alone that since Selden's books were properly
a present by Ld. Chief Justice Hales to the public library "you
would be pleased either in the preface to your catalogue or in
the body of it immediately before Selden's books, fully to acknowledge
his Lordship's bounty to which alone you owe them."
